Music Teachers of the Desert (MTOD) is part of District 4 (Riverside and San Bernardino Counties) of the California Association of Professional Music Teachers (CAPMT), which, in turn, is the state branch of the Music Teachers’ National Association (MTNA). Because of this, all MTOD members may enter students in CAPMT and MTNA events.
CompetitionsSince 2006, MTOD hosts The Robert Hennekes Music Award every other year in the Spring to award cash prizes to students of all instruments and voice to motivate, encourage and reward students of outstanding musical ability. Adjudicators are well known musicians, often from Southern California faculties. CAPMT sponsors competitions and auditions in both solo and ensemble performance and noncompetitive evaluations including theory, aural and oral exams. In the competitive events, students receiving the highest ratings are invited to perform and/or compete at the State Conference. The competitive events are the Bartók and Contemporary Music Festival, the Concerto Competition, and Honors Auditions. Students entering the Piano Auditions or the Ensemble Auditions receive a numerical rating, and the Student Evaluations are non-competitive. More information about these events can be found on CAPMT's website, under "student programs" EvaluationsEach November students participate in a State program performing for adjudicators who evaluate their playing with written comments. The CAPMT Student Evaluations program develops and evaluates performance, technique, sight playing/singing, music literacy and aural perception. All students are encouraged to participate in Evaluations, provided they are following the CAPMT guidelines. Performance for an evaluator includes three pieces representing differing time periods and styles. Memorization is recommended but is required for only one selection of repertoire. Students will have the opportunity to indicate knowledge of musical notation, symbols, terms, music history time periods, composers, form, tonality, and rhythm, relative to the repertoire selections and appropriate for the age and level of the student. The student may be questioned about knowledge of his/her instrument. More information and guidelines on CAPMT's website |
